Join The Fabulist’s eclectic and wildly talented lineup of Bay Area writers for an evening of science fiction, fantasy and fantastical prose that explore utopian and dystopian tomorrows, as seen from the depths of our own pandemic-era techno-consumerist vortex.
This event will require a mask and proof of vaccination in order to attend.
LINEUP:
Rona Fernandez (she/they), is a writer, fundraiser, cooperative housing activist, dancer, wife and #stillmother who was born and raised in the Bay and doesn’t want to live anywhere else. Her writing has appeared in The Rumpus, Instant City, Yes! Magazine, Apparition Lit and elsewhere, as well as in What God is Honored Here? An Anthology on Miscarriage and Infant Loss, the first collection of writings by Native women and women of color on this topic. Rona is an alumna of the of the Voices/VONA workshop for writers of color, the Macondo Writers Workshop and the Tin House workshops. She is currently at work on a climate fiction novel set in Northern California in the year 2051. ronafernandez.com
Russell Reza-Khaliq Gonzaga has hosted and organized events and workshops including the Sierra Poetry Festival, the Center Camp Spoken Word Stage at Burning Man, and the weekly Elyseum Writers Workshops at Harbin Hot Springs. He is Poet Laureate Emeritus of Lake County (2012-2014) and has represented San Francisco for three years at the National Poetry Slam. As an Arts Educator, he has worked with several organizations including YouthSpeaks and WritersCorps. Claire Light is a Bay Area writer, cultural worker, and activist. She has worked since 1997 in nonprofit administration, particularly in arts and social justice, and was a cofounder of Hyphen magazine. Her activism has turned most recently to disability justice, and she is co-founder of the Disability Justice League-Bay Area. You can read her fiction in McSweeney’s, Hyphen, and The Encyclopedia Project, among others. A short collection of her stories, Slightly Behind and To the Left, was published by Aqueduct Press in 2009. Nick Mamatas is the author of several novels, including I Am Providence and The Second Shooter. His short fiction has appeared in Best American Mystery Stories, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, Tor.com, and many other venues. His latest collections include The People’s Republic of Everything and The Planetbreaker’s Son. Nick also recently released the anthology Wonder & Glory Forever: Awe-Inspiring Lovecraftian Fiction. His fiction and editorial work have variously been nominated for the Hugo, World Fantasy, Shirley Jackson, and Bram Stoker awards. nick-mamatas.com/
Annalee Newitz writes science fiction and nonfiction. They are the author of the book Four Lost Cities: A Secret History of the Urban Age, and the novels The Future of Another Timeline, and Autonomous, which won the Lambda Literary Award. As a science journalist, they are a writer for the New York Times and elsewhere, and have a monthly column in New Scientist. They have published in The Washington Post, Slate, Popular Science, Ars Technica, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic, among others.
